I could roll Buddha off my tongue like no mans business. The more I read, the more I nod my head and think 'this man knows all the answers to life.' In confusing times of life, aka now, Buddha comes through with quotes that cure any query.

About a week ago, I was innocently buying some Mini Melts (best icecream ever) from the local petrol station and I happened to drop my iPhone on the concrete floor - consequently smashing the screen badly. My immediate thoughts were (1) At least it still works, (2) At least it doesn't cut my fingers up and (3) At least I'm not dead. Third one is a little OTT, i know, but in such a materialistic world, it's so easy to get incredibly hung up on the things that don't really matter. iPhone screen is crappy right now, but it can be fixed and I still have my health, baby. Reverse your thinking and focus on the good.

1. Year 12 will not kill you.

2011 was my 'senior year.' A year ago I would cringe at the thought of everything there would be to do all year. A year later and I'm done. Yes, there were tears. My God, let me tell you, I remember one night in particular; i had a Biology report to be written, two maths tests and an assignment due in the coming week. I was leaving soccer training, reached into my pockets and my car keys were nowhere to be found. I recall standing in the school car park, angry at the world, when in actual fact it was my own fault. And then it started to rain (literally.) By the time i had got home, i was muddy and cold and car-less and the last thing i wanted to do was begin my mountain of study and assignments. When i finally gathered up the motivation, i opened my bag to get out my reading glasses but alas, they were not there. Joy. The tears fell. I lay on my bed in the dark and let myself be serenaded by Ellie Goulding's 'Nobody's crying' until my very own tears had run into my ears and my eyes were so puffy they were barely visible anymore - pathetic, I know. But I remember this day so clearly, it was one of the 'bad days.' You'll have them. Year 12 or not, you'll have them. Everybody laughs, everybody cries.

2. Shopping right after payday is not a good idea.

I would know. I didn’t even last a day before I was squeezing through my front door with new shoes, and a skirt, and a top and an over-priced-but-I’ll-take-it-anyway-because-i-love it dress.

3. Fate works in mysterious ways.

Another story i never shared (and it's such a good one.) Merely weeks after final exams, i was sitting at home doing absolutely nothing when my lovely friend Lucy called me. It was just after eight and she explained she had two free tickets to see Stevie Nicks. Long story short, we arrived and didn't have to pay $10 parking, we ran giggling into the concert and took our seats in the centre right as Stevie came on stage. Thank-you Lords of good Karma.

4. Practice does not always make perfect, but it does make improvements.

Perfection is an incredibly unrealistic goal. I realized that this year both in academics (I am definitely not one of those 100/100 Maths test girl) and in photography. Every time a photographer shoots something different, they are improving both their knowledge and skills.

5. Adele is perfect photo editing music.

Nothing too much to be said about this one, other than I freaking loooove Adele. Seriously. In case you wanted to know. Things like ‘Don’t you Remember’ and ‘Turning Tables’ goes down well with some late nights and a new batch of photos and

6. Don’t overcommit

Would have saved myself so much hassle had I listened to this one at the beginning of the year. You are one person, don’t underestimate yourself but don’t overwork yourself. Fine line, people, fine line.

7. Mum will always find out

Learnt this one the hard way. I backed out of the drive way in my mother’s car a couple of weeks ago and took down our poor mailbox, which was cemented into the ground. In my defense – it was dark and I was doing it backwards! Yet, she still found out, and safe to say, I have not driven her car since. They always find out.

8. Be there, always.

This is so damn important. When your loved one, or friend needs you, just be there, plain and simple. Your presence means more than you think.

9. Time stops for no one.

This year flew past in a manner that leaves me wondering just how fast next year will go, and the year after that, and so on. For that reason, it is crucial to soak up each day and find the time to do something you love in each day.

It can be applied to life itself, as well. There is no use wasting energy on what you do not know or cannot control, instead continue to build on what you are sure of.

If you haven't noticed, my dad was (still is) quite the photographer. Though he doesn't admit nor did it become his career, what he will tell me is at the age of about fifteen, he used to spend all this pocket money on photography magazines at his local newsagency.

It's quite funny that at the age of fifteen, I too became obsessed with this whole photography thing. Is it all in our genes?

The very best part of it though is being able to thumb through albums and run my fingers over images that are perfectly composed and shot. Thanks for that one Dad. It is also motivating for me to continue capturing my siblings, family and friends so that in 20 years their children will be able to thumb through albums and see their loved ones in a way that only a camera can freeze.

In the Secret Garden

It was Saturday, December 3rd under the sun, and shaded by the trees, where we shook out rugs and unpacked goodies.

I had the previledge of shooting Australian recording artist, Matt Corby, aka the fabulously talented 'Matty.' If you have not heard of him/heard him...please do your ears a favor and search him on iTunes or surrender to this wonderful ditty.

Additionally, i shot the wonderful Laura Hill and Sam Brittain. Both incredibly talented and lovely.

Another one of life's 'I don't think I can write about this, because i don't think i can sum it up' moments or should i say, afternoons. Music danced all around us, in such a wonderful way that i turned to Rosie and said 'all artists should be this way. Performing intimately for the sole purpose of performing and sharing their talent.'

In case you are not aware of the date (here in Australia) it's December 1st.
I can hear the carol-ers singing from here...not really, no one does that here.

But really. The decorations are hanging from every shopping mall, and there is that Christmas hype as you wander down the aisles in the supermarket. Everyone is planning what they'll eat, what decorations will look best this year and what gifts will be exchanged. However, I urge you to soak in the best part of it all - the time to relax and spend time with those who mean most. E-N-J-O-Y I-T.

In other news; my sissy Sophie got a haircut. And doesn't it just look fabulous? Call her Pixie.

Hope you are all well and not too wrapped up (no pun intended) in the season of joy.

Taste of Christmas in the rain.

If you were to paint a picture of an Australian Christmas it would involve hot days, warm nights, swimming, barbecues and endless sunshine.

Come Saturday, or the day of the local Christmas pageant, and we were exposed to a very different Christmas scenario.

The magician who kept the young ones amused while waiting for the start.

Instead of applying sunscreen to squirming faces, umbrellas were spotted amongst the crowd as mummas, papas and grandparents alike tried their best to shield their children from the rain. But of course, come rain or shine, there is nothing that can keep the Christmas spirit from circulating the crowd when the carols start floating in the air. (Note: man standing in pouring rain, with a huge smile plastered on his face that could only be put there when Mariah Carey starts booming through the speakers with 'All i want for Christmas is you.')

Finding the perfect spot

The magic of Christmas to a child was more than noticeable on Saturday when every single parent or care giver was huddled under shelter, while their children were in the rain. They were sacrificing dry and warm clothes just for the opportunity to be that much closer to the festivities or that much more likely to score the lollies and candy off of the clowns passing by. Dedication i tell ya, dedication that only a child could have.

I have to admit though, Christmas is my absolute favourite time of the year. The atmosphere is always unbelievable, and despite the dreary weather on Saturday the atmosphere at the pageant did not disappoint. I stood holding everyone's jackets, and hats and water bottles and uneaten snacks, and in the process of doing so must have looked so apart of the 'mum and dad' crowd that a man walked right on up to me and offered me a flier which read: 'Mother's club: Christmas edition - helping mum's buy the perfect gifts.' I like to think I smiled politely and took it but in reality i probably gave the poor guy a 'dude, I am 17, I'm not their mother, I'm just the babysitter!' face.

So let me be honest. I think I enjoyed the taste of Christmas a whole lot more than some of the children on Saturday and I am fine with that. I found myself more than once waving at the floats, then realised I'm meant to be the adult here. I later also realised that most of the adults around me were doing the exact same thing. And later, we sang along to carols and clapped when the bands came past and it all felt pretty ideal.

Like someone once told me, 'never fail to find the good in your days.'

We found spirit and excitement in wet and dreary

Christmas is on it's way, and I couldn't be happier. Here's to carols, christmas lights and late night gift wrapping.

Young Ones.

I wrote the following piece just under two years ago, and re-found it today:

What is youth?

It is swinging from a leafless tree, whose life has been sucked from within it, but as you glide, feeling on top of the world?

It is leaping eagerly into nature’s soaked floor, free of cares and worries, dancing and floating about in the exquisiteness of the dirt and grime?

To be overcome briefly with Autumn’s problems which the Winter’s rain will so quickly wash away, almost as fast as the dark cloud arose.

Laughing with your head thrown back and eyes closed, enveloped in an endless bliss with no over hanging clock.

To see through eyes over flowing with purity, witnessing only the beauty in the night sky and the good in the evil.

A youthful soul is captured in a drift of innocence, colourful life and uncontrollably endless love weaving it’s way among you, until time eventually takes it’s unpredictable course (life itself.) In your existence, time will alter the colour of life, just as it reduces one’s ability to love wildly.

The beginning of that unpredictable course, provides an undying pleasure, but so it does shields ones eyes of the bitterness of the unripened fruit.

Insistent that you know the ways of the world, a heavy heart you will soon obtain, when you trust too many and ignore the wise.

Decisions that are given no thought and agreed to just too quickly, will land you on an undesired path.

But eventually it’s certain, you’ll somehow, almost certainly find your way back to home and heart.

To be youthful is a choice, made consciously by our inner child that unlike hope, never fades. It’s an escape from retched reality, a choice to see life through different eyes. It is to jump in mud puddles but dream of oceans, to be old on the outside but young at heart.

No matter how much you try to deny or conceal it, youth is a voice, waiting for you to revisit it, waiting for you to see the beauty again.

Youth can last forever, it hides in the crevice of your heart, awaiting your call.

But it’s an altered youth.

The beauty remains but the new youth is graced with scars.

Some deep and some shallow, lessons learnt and love lost, but like diamonds youth can last forever.

Young people see the world so differently.

Hold onto youth fiercely as if it is your most valuable possession. It may even be so.

As night falls after a day spent shooting, should you be in my house, you will find yourself subject to the repetitive loop of my 'photo editing playlist' coming from iTunes. I can sit for hours and bump up the exposure, or convert to black and white, or lessen the contrast or modify the colouring of images - in fact; it is sky high on the list of 'things i love to do.' Bumped just above spending a warm night by the pool, and just under going out for coffee, editing images has quickly become one of my favourite things to do.

I am d-o-n-e.

It’s 9.21am and I can hear various elements of the neighbourhood pass me by. I hear a gardener, the soft hum of the mailman on his way to carry out his morning duties and several cars passing by my street, each and every one on their way to something different. Blue skies with smatterings of cloud. Normalcy. Perfect normalcy.
I, on the other hand, am sitting here…trying to tell you what I am feeling simply by what I can see. If i had to sum it up, it would involve something like running and dancing through a field to the tune of a mash up of both ‘the start of something new’ and ‘I’m walking on sunshine.’

There are really no words to eloquently put how it feels to finish school. After so many hours of reading theory, writing, marking, testing and re-doing it all again for exams, finishing it all is by far the sweetest strawberry in the punnet. And I’m savouring every bite. (Ha, cheeeee-eesy, but oh so true.)

And at this moment, I am still in the stage where every couple of hours or so, i will remember that I am finished with school and the exhilarating feeling courses through my body once again. The prospect of ‘No, sorry’ ‘I cant,’ ‘I will’ being replaced with ‘Yes, I can, I am’ is still settling into my confused self, and it feels good to say ‘Why yes, yes i can.’

Like yesterday. Just hours after my handing up my psychology exam, Isabel Wilson and I decided to celebrate with a shoot. It lasted 40 minutes on a rooftop car park. Cue the rain, and shoots over, folks. However, sometimes shoots like work out the best.

We drove home in the pouring rain, listening to Angus and Julia Stone while i came to that realization all over again that i can do this as much as i want now. Freedom. Quick to ignite and slow to burn. A feeling so strong that i wanted to leave my car at the intersection and lie in the rain like so:

Class of 2011

I started to write this post at least seven times, but continuously sighed and hit the backspace button, dissatisfied and wondering how on Earth I could appropriately sum up my week. The answer lies within the lines of that very dilemma. It’s next to impossible to articulate how it felt to finish school; instead it’s a collection of emotion, not a collection of words. I deliberately waited a few days before I tried to write, thinking I’d let myself go through the motions so I could reach the other side, sigh contentedly and write my heart out…with it all seamlessly making sense. Shame on me for thinking four days would lend me the time I need to swim through those motions.

Each emotion marches on in, feeling like it’s here to stay, before the other sweeps in and quickly takes it place. There is happy and sad, anxious and excited, worried and enthusiastic, nervous and glad. There is ‘so incredibly sad to say goodbye to the elements of that life, and so incredibly thrilled to say hello to freedom and travel and beginning something else.’ It would be nice, one day in the coming days to reach the balance between both. I think, possibly maybe, that balance will come once I am rid of final exams and NEW YORK is that little bit closer…Sayonara school, hello City that never sleeps.

The Good Life.

It's 8.48pm and I am procrastinating. I have mock exams in merely days. I have my real exams in under four weeks. I have so much to do, and quite literally, not enough time. I have an enormous assignment due very soon. I also have infected sinuses. (Thanks for that one immune system - i love counting on you in my times of need.) I am finishing school...I am finishing school.

However, I am in no position to complain. I am almost done. I've said it all year, but really, i can taste summer and I can smell freedom. It's whirling towards me in slow motion, in a way that makes it seem so close to me, but so slow to arrive. But when it does arrive? Oh! I can tell it's going to be nothing short of sweet, and every bit worth the time it took to arrive.

And freedom for me? The Good Life. I am looking forward to treating myself and finally being able to do things i haven't been able to do this year. Who knows where this will take me. Big things like traveling to NEW YORK (April 15th, baby! I am already counting down!) and little things like one day without study or guilt from not studying (aka. right now.)

Money-maker.

“I’ve decided I’m going to start charging you 10 cents per photograph you take of me,” said Alex while i hurriedly snapped to steal the last light of this summery day.

“It’s a dog eat dog world out there, Katherine.” And with that i had to shield my grin behind my lens. Brother knows far too much for a kid.

So apparently, I owe the boy just over a dollar. High price for entertainment.

That Milo yoghurt he’s consuming is the bribery for a few pretty snaps of his cute face. Boy hasn’t learnt that concept yet. I’ve still got time.

I’m a sucker for his sharp, brown eyes.

On another note; I have four weeks til I am finished with school. I will most likely be absent but may appear within this time to savour my sanity.

Study, sleep, repeat.

The poor youngest boy in our house hold is riddled with sickness.

While waiting for mum to return from work I was attending to his every need.

How do i deal with a sick 9 year old?

Plain rice.

Snapping his shot while he sleeps, and dying inside at the way he does so.

The dog posessively watches on. She knows whats up.

And more naps.

10 days til this brother of mine turns 10.

He'll be 10, and I'll be 18 and there's just so much in between. He's reaching the other side of 10, and I'm about to reach adult hood. In age we are so different, but then again we are so much the same. And i think he's taught me more than I have taught him.

I don't know how much longer he'll let me snap his photo. Not sure when the response to the lens will shift from 'okay' to 'oh my god, go away.' Because in my mind he's a compliant 5 year old kid, not a 10 year old boy.

'There comes a point in our lives when we have to say goodbye to childhood and venture out in the adult world. A world full of 'musts' 'shoulds' and 'responsibilities' and a startling lack of fun. With so much pressure to achieve and so little time to enjoy oneself it may seem that the childish joy of doing nothing is in danger of being lost forever.'

Thumbing through a book i was given in 2009 tonight, and came across that quote. It then goes on to say that youthful minds are never 'lost.' We may grow up and be stained by the seriousness of the adult world but you can find yourself again by resorting back to the essence of your childhood.

If the essence of my 'childhood' is taking photos, does that mean if i do this for the rest of my life, i will remain young at heart?

Those are my thoughts tonight. A few more photos to share...

today was a prime example of my perfect day.

wake late, coffee and lunch at a cafe with a little side of window shopping. no photo editing to be done, no schedule. sitting and talking with my favourite of people. driving around looking for new shoot locations. no work, no stress, no worry.

so simple.

as year 12 impedes on myself and my schedule builds, these days become more distant and more a fragment of my imagination than anything else. it's nice to know they still exist, and the sun goes down with a satisfied hum.

Have you ever been nervous to try something different?

Ever been scared it wouldn't work out, or you would fail?

Yesterday i shot out of my comfort zone. I tried something a little edgier, a little less whimsy and little more rock. I need diversity. I need to show i can do different things. Daunting and nerve-racking, wonderful and exciting.

I feel terrible for my absence, but please let me explain myself.

No willing models in the house at 5pm results in test shooting the light, using myself.

My head is cluttered and clouded at this moment in time. I haven't blogged because I haven't had any adequate words. One day I'll wake wanting to write about something, and go to sleep wanting to write another. My feelings on something change with the hour. A reoccurring thought for me at the moment is my future, and how I'm getting there. Time is moving so fast, and my life is changing so much that i feel like i can't write the words properly, and in frustration - i don't write at all. (Have you sensed that I am a perfectionist yet?)

So I am sorry.

From this deep pit of my confused heart, I am sorry.

What i can tell you is, in four short months I will be finished with school forever.

It's like there is this line of 'before' and 'after' school. I can see the 'after' and i want the 'after' and when I get there, you will most certainly know. I will be sharing everything and anything i can. I have big plans, and big ideas so please, despite my reoccuring absence - stay with me. I won't disappoint you, I promise.

The flood of continuous events specifically diagnosed as my life has hit me hard lately. The days have folded away, night after night, passing me by so quickly. But quickly doesn't mean smoothly. I know I have spoken more than a thousand times here of my never-ending state of busy, but this is not busy, this is chaotic and challenging.

How do i deal with it? We can rise or fall. Instinctively, we all choose to rise. The ebb and flow of life, i believe, is a series of dips and peaks. Rising and falling, or fumbling if you will. Nothing is every permanent.

So i was in a 'fall' state last week. I blame the weather. Cold, wet, cloudy. I also blame school. Stressful, tiring and never-ending.

I'd forgotten how 'live in the moment,' or 'enjoy the small things' and got caught in the big picture. Whenever this happens I know i need to be creative.

That brings me to yesterday, Saturday.

Packed up some clothes, straightened Ella's hair (1.5 hour process, i kid you not,) packed camera bag for the first time in a looooong time and drove to my favourite shooting location.

Here they are, for you to enjoy as well: enjoy the small things.

I've been thinking a lot about success lately.

I strive for it, we all do - in some shape of form. It can be little things or big things.

But what is it, really?

I don't know if it could be defined as a certain income or a particular job but rather a state. Isn't it a feeling? When you know you've done your best, or you are the best at what you do. In my mind, that is success.

Photos tonight: a random array of images picked at a whim. Scattered from different times last year. Just like my brain at the moment. Busy, busy life at the moment trying to fit too many things into one day. But busy is good. Enjoy:

'Formal Fever'

...Is a term used to describe the lead-up to Year 12 Formal, which for those who are American is 'Senior Prom.'

And Formal fever we had. Big time.

The following images were not taken by me and are not of high-quality. I know this blog is predominantly about sharing photo's I have taken, but its also about documentation. So document, i will :)

My eyes. All credit goes to 'ORBE hair and make-up.' Funny story, actually. I asked for "some 'different' eyes that would match my dress" but watched in horror as the make-up artist began to make me look like i had two terrible black eyes. However, 20 minutes later and it looked like that. And i loved. Super talented make-up artist. Had i tried, i most certainly would have failed.

Alex actually thought i was getting married. I had to tell him that typically requires a white dress and a fiancee, both of which i do not have. Don't think he understood.

But the best thing about Formal? Yes it's fun getting yourself dressed and pretty, but my favourite part is seeing all your friends made up. It's so exciting, and i can tell you with confidence that every single of them (yes you, ella, rosie, lucy, clare, hannah, danielle, alice, eleni, alana, amelia, etc etc all of year 12) looked incredible.

But alas, it's over. And this post will be my reminder of what a good night it was. And always and forever now, we're moving forward onto the next thing.

I have other ten thousand photos from the past twelve months.

Sometimes, (when i'm pushed to do so) i go through them again. And again. And again. And occasionally delete the odd one or two. (Emphasis on the one or two)

I believe in preserving life in photos.

I can look at these and tell you exactly how i was feeling when i took these.

It's a crazy and amazing thing.

Each photo should reflect an emotion, memory, anything, something. If my photos do, then i think it's a job well done.

It's like anything in life really. If you can come away from something feeling good or having learnt something, it was worth while - no matter what.

I'm learning, always learning.

Last night, two of my good friends attended a formal for another school.

They looked beautiful. No surprise there. And for some who have asked, my photos are not photoshopped - ever. I work in Lightroom and adjust colour and exposure only. No airbrushing.

And finally. On the second to last night, we went to a special place where you can see the moon as it rises. It's called, 'staircase to the moon' as it gives the illusion that there is a stairway to the moon. Beautiful. Unbelievable. Worth getting eating by mosquitoes for.

Wear no worries

I'm on the West Coast of Australia for the next few days, and i have been for the past few too.

It's been good. Good to get away and live without school for a while.

We wear no worries at this place. We carry no stress, and certainly no sickness or tiredness. There's no hospitals, appointments, assignments, lessons or Monday mornings here. Something I became accustomed to the past few months. It's a change and it's nice.

However, I packed my camera but forgot my camera cord. So, until i am home, iphone images will have to do.

And this: Alex tried and tried, over and over to build a sand castle, and i watched over and over as it was washed away by the destructive waves. Yet, he continued building, castle after castle. He actually paused at one point when i questioned his determination and said "no i'm not stopping, i have to keep trying." Yes Alex, you do. Always.

Next year, I am no longer in high-school, I am on my own. In the big, wide world. What to do with a power like this?

I want to find myself, through others.

I want to meet new people with stories. I would like to make some sort of change. I would like to spread love and inspiration, all that. I don't want to stay where i am. I need to travel. I need to see the world through my lens - not just my backyard.

I know what I want, but I'm not sure how to get there.

It's all about the eyes.

Born to be somebody.

Fitting title for this post actually because as I type this, seventeen years ago, I was born. To the minute. Weird. But yes, today I turn seventeen.

I was thinking earlier about what i believe in. I'm one of those people who believe people are born for purpose. Born to be something, born to do something, be somebody etc etc. And then i came to this conclusion tonight that we shouldn't have to worry about who we are meant to be/what we are meant to become because whatever it is, you were born to do. Fate has a funny way of working it out. But you should trust it, regardless. And when you feel lost and in the midst of the unknown, try and trust that things will work out when you least expect them too.

I started photography because i clicked on the wrong link in Google and I was quite literally instantly inspired. The changes since then have literally blown all of my first expectations out of the park. I cannot believe it. At all. I didn't think a couple of years ago I'd be holding a photography exhibition. Instead i thought I'd be sitting the UMAT test for Med School. But you go with the flow anyway, because it may just be what you were born to do.

Enough of my rant that probably didn't make sense - I need sleep.

Battle on.

Not only is photography my passion but it's a huge form of procrastination.

It's constant. It never fades, ever.

I wondered a lot last year if this 'hobby' was a phase, if it was something that would come and go, like many of my hobbies did when i was younger (Cough, wanting to be a world class roller-skater cough.)

But it never did. Instead it's become stronger. I'm my strongest behind a lens. Maybe it's because behind a lens, you can create the world you want. You can jump out of the one your in, and create something for yourself.

It's with everyday passing that i begin to realize this is what i need. Not just want i want, but what i need, too. Somehow, somewhere my life needs to be molded around me, and my camera. No this does not mean i will be walking hand in hand along a moonlit beach having romantic walks with my camera. I need more in life but i figure if you're following dreams, the rest will follow.

It's also with everyday that i notice photography is not something you turn off when you want a break. You never stop thinking in frames. Documenting life and a living it are no longer two separate things, they have meshed together.

So, this post is sort of a promise to myself. To look back on when I need the upward thinking and remember that this is what i need. And to stop at nothing.

It feels like an intermission tonight. The break between the busy.

Things have been unbelievably busy these past few weeks. Unbelievable.10,000 things going on at once. I'm forgetting to step back and remember where i am and what I'm doing.

Anyway, onto some news...

Why i love this poem so much? It rings far too true. Billions of moments pass us by every second, but we focus on the negative. Why? I will never know. I am guilty of doing it myself, but life is easier when we blur the background and focus on the foreground - what's important, what actually matters. Be aware of the treasure you are surrounded by.

Then, stop carrying around excess worry and fear. It brings you down.

Fresh eyes.

My life has felt out of focus lately.

Blurry.

Unreachable.

A little like this aeroplane.

But tonight, i picked up my camera. Through the lens, with fresh eyes, I focused the world.

I cleared the blur.

I calmed myself.

I am dependent on my passion, dependent on creativity and forever craving new photos. But sometimes life gets in the way. However, being away from doing what I love to do, shows me that it isn't just a phase, but now an inbuilt part of me. The feeling i get from being behind the lens is irreplaceable, and i know that no matter how long i am away from my camera, the feeling is still there the moment i pick it back up. I am myself again. I can see the world with fresh eyes again. And how incredible that is.

After an extremely rough 24 hours, and a couple of ‘off’ days after that, I am myself again.

Let's just hope that this time it lasts. I am still with a billion antibiotics, and i haven’t seen the last of the hospital, but right now – i am out of pain, and i am okay.

Once again, this is a kick in the gut that reminds me to be thankful for my health when i have it. Words, my words, they always fail me when i need to get my point across but I’ll try:

I am glad that this infection is curable.

I am grateful that I will get better.

I am so, unbelievably thankful for my health.

Something else I am thankful for today?

My super photogenic best friend who celebrates her seventeenth birthday today.

Again, words fail me.

Sick and sicker.

Remember how i said i felt better, and my wisdom were gone for good, and la la la everything was fine and dandy?

Well it was. Until a few days ago.

I've developed a big infection and the hideous swelling, inability to eat and agonising pain is back. It sucks..big time.

So it's off to the hospital we go, to my dismay.

I'm in need of another operation will be staying there for a few days.

Just wanting to let all of you beautiful followers, and anonymous readers that I will be out for a while but hopefully will be back very soon - and this time for real - much better.

Reading my favourite pick-me-up-when-i'm-down-and-lost-every-ounce-of-motivation book tonight, and thumbed my favourite quote. It's very true. Too true, almost. Kind of makes me want to jump up and try to change the world.

21st of January.

The 21st of January looked like this. Blue skies, sun shining, no clouds and 35 degrees celcius (that's 95 degrees fahrenheit for all the Americans out there.)

Not so perfect in my books however, uh uh, no.

It was time for those pesky wisdom teeth to come out.

The day went something like this:

2pm - arrived at hospital. I was ready to run away already. Surely if i wasn't admitted i could still bail out on this, right?

2.30pm - Admitted. Wearing a hospital wrist-band. This is getting too official for my likings.

2.45pm - Taken to Room 147, waiting for the nurse. Trying to tell Dad some jokes to take my mind off things...unsuccessful.

3.00pm - Wearing a gown, booties and cap. Hands are starting to sweat.

3.30pm - Dad's leaving. I'm pretending to watch the tennis when in reality I'm debating an escape route.

3.45pm - Anaesthesiologist comes for a final visit before it's time for the holding bay.

4.10pm - Taken to the holding bay. More like 'torture bay.' Given a warm rug and a magazine. Nurse comes and asks for my details for the fifth time.

4.25pm - Escorted with the surgeon to the operating theatre. Trying to play cool, like i've done this a bajillion times. Not sure if my act is believable. Amused by the fact that the doctors and nurses are listening to the radio in the theatre as if my wisdom teeth operation is a party.

"What school do you go to? What do you want to do when you finish school?" The man asks as he injects something into me. His face starts to contort and move.

Next thing i know, the whole room is spinning and i recall asking if it's normal, then BAM, black.

---

5.40pm - The room is spinning uncontrollably and I call for a nurse. Legs feel as if they weigh at least 100 pounds.

5.45pm - Hooked up to oxygen through a nose tube. Blood. Everywhere. Not. Fun.

6.10pm - Wheeled back to room. Attempt to eat Jelly. One word: embarrassing.

7.00pm - Back to normality. Dressed and ready to go home. Nurse makes me drink water. Water misses mouth and spills all over my shirt and pants, along with blood. "Good look" the nurse laughs. Again, embarrassing.

7.50pm - Discharged.

7.42pm January 22nd - Resembling a beaten up chipmunk. Blue bruises covering my cheeks. Sore, sore jaw. Tired, droopy eyes. Annoying, yucky stitches. But thank-ful.

A story of my today I will share with you. I was waiting impatiently (anyone who knows me knows I struggle with being patient..) to ask for staff assistance at Target this afternoon. The staff member stood listening as the customer asked again and again for the difference between two products of lotion before the staff member adopted a harsh tone and rudely told her she should ask someone else. The staff member then proceeded to give her an extremely rude look before walking off. As I observed, I witnessed the customers face go from shock to anger to sadness. Behind her stood what to me looked obviously like her daughter, between the age of 5-7. She appeared to be terminally ill. 'That customer's family is going through hell' i though quietly. I suddenly felt catapulted out of my very own body and into the body of the worst human being on the planet. There was nothing I could do, and I felt just so unbelievably sorry. This customer was disregarded simply because she was asking a few more questions on which lotion as probably right for her daughter.

It’s made me realize, rather abruptly, in the middle of Target…holding my insignificant items that don’t we know that almost every single person in this world has some sort of issue, everyday. Don’t we realise that the girl you may have given a dirty look to at the supermarket could be going home to a dying mother, or may not have a home to go to at all. Or maybe the guy you served at work who seemed annoying may have lost his son last year, or is loosing his son this year.

It’s like all the harsh, hard and cruel things in this world like struggling with money, going through divorce, ending a relationship, miscarriage, moving house, a sick loved one, domestic violence or as simple to say: a bad day. And yet we disregard the possibility of all of that most of the time and continue on in the pieces of our lives, in our bubbles, too busy to remember what someone else could be dealing with. So this final message comes from a post that I’ve read before. And that message is: treat people gently, softly, like they are going to break, even if they’re not. Because you just don’t know. People are good at concealing their emotions, and hiding anything that could be broken. A smile rather than a brush off the shoulder could make all the difference in the world. Afterall, when you’re dealing with something terrible, you’ll want someone, anyone to do the same for you.

And just because my post is naked without photographs, and i feel these kiddos haven't appeared on here in a long time :)

He knows. Alex knows that face can make anyone weak at the knees and vulnerable to saying 'yeah sure you can' to any demand or request.

Finally, i'm off to hospital tomorrow afternoon to get my dreaded teeth out.

Petrified, yes.

Anxious, yes.

Desire to fast-forward to a week from now, absolutely.

However, nothing I can do about it now, except beg for happy gas and a smooth sailing operation.

Three weeks it took to connect the Internet at our new house. Only a little bit frustrating.

But I’m back, i have missed you all!

The natural light in our main bathroom is to-die-for.

Now comes the tough task of choosing prints for the white and plain walls.

Tis the season to be tired.

Yawn. We’re packing the house up to move yet again and studying for the first of many year 12 (grade 12) tests. Of course, while all this is happening, my anaemia has decided to come in thick and fast and make me feel like I’m sleep walking..constantly. But, alas, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Christmas is less than a month away. My favourite time of the year.

Finally, I’m preparing a question and answer post with questions from my blog readers -- I’d love to hear from you! Yes, you. Cloud-dreaming.

In the recent months I lost perspective.

I lost cloud-dreaming.

In the flurry of all the end of year activity, I’ve forgotten what is important. Everything has moved one hundred times faster than last year, and I’ve stopped tonight and caught my breath. I looked at the sky, and remembered a time when i could cloud dream, or when i could sink my feet in the grass for just a little and be.

Tonight, finally, (and i mean finaaaallllyyyy) i had some time. Just a little in between studying for my end of year exams to be for a moment.

I don’t see much in the clouds tonight, maybe i need to look harder…

For those who haven't followed this story since the beginning, my first post can be found here.

While these past few months have been super busy and challenging, and my posts have become further apart, I am extremely thankful for those who have stuck around and given a huge amount of support. Thank-you, one thousand and one times over.

My breather.

Is how I’ve come to describe photography.

It is my breather. I let go of tension i didn’t know I was holding when i snap away, and when I process an image in editing that i adore, I breath another sigh, another breath i didn’t know I was holding.

Just how amazing are her eyes…

And something written a while back, most probably when I was in my world of I-have-no-motivation:

What is beauty? Is it a face, a feature or a colour? Is it a song, a dance or a star? Is it a moment? A consuming, breath stopping, heart aching moment? They say, you’ll know it when you see it, you’ll feel it, then you’ll know. Well, you see…I’ve beat the system. I’ve figured that it’s ordinary moments, that we pass by, that we take for granted and live and breathe. It’s moments we live through each and everyday that are full of beauty, but we don’t realize til someone takes a photograph, and captures that beauty. Then you realize you’re living it. It’s all around you. You. You are beauty.

And the pictures, they are from today’s Halloween party. While we don’t celebrate it much here in Australia, we still like to dress up sometimes :) Scarier-not-so-beautiful images coming soon..

Celebration Day 2010.

I had the pleasure of photographing the year 12’s (seniors..for all you Americans out there) last day at school on Friday.

It was such an emotional but amazing day, and i was so lucky to be able to capture most of it. There is no way i could share all of it, (as all of it is actually 300 photos) but I’ll share a bit.

PS – I am sincerely sorry for my lack of blogging as of late. I’ve been so busy that it is actually running me down, and I’ve been back and forth between the doctors having tests. Turns out I’m actually severely anaemic. For anyone out there who has it, you know what I’m talking about. You just feel terrible, all the time. So i am so sorry to all who still read and comment…I adore you. And i promise, I’m trying to get back to a routine of this :)

After my huge disappointment, my family and i packed up for the long weekend and headed for the beach.

3 days of sunshine, the beach, music, a local carnival, close friends, my second family, my best friends, dresses and shorts and relaxation looks like this:

Insert huge sigh here. Australian Summer is on it’s way.

No Alex didn’t get the chickenpox while we were away, but yes, the mosquitoes ate him alive. Explains his grumpy expression. That, paired with the fact it was around 8am.

The universe works in a strange way. After huge disappointment and a ‘blah’ week, this was just what i needed.So I’m ready again, I’m myself again..for now :)

I’ve never won a competition in my entire life.

But the other day i won 2 VIP passes to a premiere in Syndey, at FOX studios, to mingle with a number of directors and actors including Geoffrey Rush. However, for once in my life, I couldnt access my emails for a few days, then simply forgot to do it.

This meant i couldn’t claim my prize.

The premiere was on Friday.

I wasn’t there. I missed out.

Devastated doesn’t sum it up.

Somebody please make me feel better! It was fate? I wasn’t meant to go!?

Now excuse me while i continue to drown in agony at the thought that i could have taken pictures at this premiere.

Until i actually do manage to do something as exciting as that…here is 2 of Alex…

Forgive me. My blogging as of late, has been terrible.

It’s getting me down too, i just haven't properly done a shoot in a LONG time (when i say a long time, i mean around a month) – which is a long time for me anyway.

So forgive me. I haven’t posted, because i haven’t thought of anything to post.

Bit and pieces.

Apologies in advance for the random array of photographs that will appear in this post.

I’ll start at the beginning.

1. Sunday Morning. This is the moment in time where the kid is in between being by mum to put his clothes for the day on, and being a ninja and actually dodging mum. Ha, i know, he seems innocent in this shot. But right after? He threw a pillow at my head. I still love this shot though. The kid is growing.

2. My nineteen year old brother left us on Monday morning to study for an entire year in the USA. Heavy hearts over in this house today, heavy hearts. This shot actually not only demonstrates my insomnia that i had that night/morning, but shows that even at 6.11am in the morning i still have the desire to pick up my camera (of all things i could be doing, ie: still sleeping) And i love this photo. It’s foggy, and misty and sad. Like the moment.

3. Cam himself, Monday morning at the airport. Looking rather pleased with himself. Well, to be honest, i would be too if i was leaving Wintery Australia for Sunny California!

4. This one? Back in July. It just makes me sigh. The flare is my therapy tonight.

My sincere apologies to those who follow my blog and may have wondered if i have dropped off the face of the Earth these past weeks. I haven’t. I am here.

But, i have been so, so busy with school and organising shoots, and birthdays that looking at my blog would flip me into depression over the fact that i haven’t posted in so long.

Today’s photos? Alex.

He’s hasn’t been showing up on my blog as much as you used to for three reasons:

1. He now believes that my camera is some sort of evil..thing and won’t even look at it, let alone hold still for a shot.

2. He knows that “Alex just oneeeee photo…” actually means thirty-one.

3. My bribery skills need work. You can only offer him chocolate so many times before it gets old…

Three weeks late.

But you know what they say? Better late than never.

I dragged Lucy out, three weeks ago, in her formal dress.

For those of you who are not Australian, formal is equivalent ‘prom.’

Anywho. We got a few overly lovely shots, as well as some serious stares from the driving-by general public. Apparently it’s not normal to stand at a lookout when it’s winter in your formal dress…oh well.

Here we go:

I love, love, love {did i say love} this shot.

And i almost cried with joy when i saw this photo. Sun. Flare. How. I. Have. Missed. You.

Then Lucy turned the camera on me. For two quick seconds. Amidst my hyper-ventilating (as seen in my disapproving expression below,) over her using my beloved camera, she got something that turned out non blurry and now that i look at it, quite…creepy.

I love how this one actually looks all summery, vibrant and bright. It’s all smoke and mirrors. Freakin freezing. The camera has a great way of deceiving people. It was eight degrees Celsius.

Meet Leone and Mavournee:

Yesterday. Uh Yeah, yesterday as in…the foggiest day in Adelaide’s history (not really but i most definitely, absolutely felt and looked like it) i joined forces with these two wonderful girls for an epic shoot at the Botanic Gardens.

Yes. It was cold.

But yes, they posed like professionals for ~~almost~~ two hours straight.

And yes, it was so worth it.

Leo and Mav – a huge thank-you to the both of you. Yes, i was there to help too, but without you both in the frame, the picture wouldn’t be as wonderful. Thanks for freezing your fingers off for these.

And another thank-you to Lucy…~~who held the camera bag, played the music~~ and created some genius ideas.

Sweet Distraction.

I have the worst head cold at the moment.

You know those ones that literally render it hard to breathe through your nose? And then you try breathing through your mouth and you start a coughing fit?

Yeah. One of them.

I couldn’t even hire soppy dvds properly today because at the moment my voice resembles that of an animal dying. Not fun.

So basically, I haven’t picked up the camera properly in over two weeks, which is a long time for me, so for now…I am posting some images that were meant to be posted three weeks ago.

So amidst my tissues and Strepsils, I bring you Rosie: Three Weeks late.
